The report by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission investigating Canadas residential school system includes 94 recommendations. Justice Murray Sinclair, Canada's first aboriginal justice and the commission's chairman, says one of those recommendations is a formal apology from the Pope for the role the Catholic Church played in the residential school system. (Sinclair says during the period from Confederation until the decision to close residential schools in 1969, Canada clearly participated in a period of cultural genocide.)
