Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard agrees with the assessment of the Truth and Reconciliation commission that Canada's aboriginal people were victims of a cultural genocide. Unlike Prime Minister Stephen Harper, the premier is not hesitant about using the phrase to describe the impact of the country's residential schools. Couillard told reporters in Quebec City he shares the views of the commission which were expressed in its recent report. (But Couillard says Quebec is an example other provinces could follow. He points to the province's achievements in its dealings with First Nations, such as the James Bay agreement and efforts to negotiate a treaty with the Innu.)
