The federal Fisheries department says fewer than forty thousand seals were landed during this year's East Coast commercial hunt, making it one of the lowest on record. Rebecca Aldworth of Humane Society International-Canada says the hunt was the lowest in two decades and should be phased out. (The federal government has defended and promoted the commercial seal hunt as humane, sustainable and well regulated. Aldworth says she again witnessed this year what she calls a cruel slaughter of young seals that often suffer before they die.)
