The B-C government has signed a contract to use an iconic but aging water bomber to battle the province's wildfires. The Martin Mars air tanker is based in the Vancouver Island city of Port Alberni and can dump 27-thousand litres of water in one drop. Forests Minister Steve Thomson says the province and the Coulson Group of Companies have agreed to a one-month, 600-thousand dollar agreement, plus hourly flying costs. (Chief fire information officer Kevin Skrepnek says there have been 945 fires throughout the province since April 1st, burning more than 23-hundred square kilometres of land.)
