A few dozen people gathered at a Halifax church today to call for the banning of the Confederate flag across Canada. Nova Scotian Citizens Against White Supremacy say the flag is a symbol of racism and displaying it publicly should be considered a hate crime. Rally organizer Lynn Jones says she was shocked to see a Confederate flag painted on a pickup truck recently in Truro, Nova Scotia. (The Maritime province has a history of racial tension, punctuated by incidents such as the forced relocation of black residents from their Halifax community of Africville by the city in the late 1960s to make way for industrial development.)
