With an election looming, the federal government is promising millions of dollars to fix a major traffic tie-up in Winnipeg. Ottawa, the Manitoba government and Winnipeg city hall will each put up 46 million dollars for a new underpass on Waverly Street in the Winnipeg South-Centre riding. The riding was a longtime Liberal bastion until 2011, when Conservative Joyce Bateman took the seat. Bateman says she's been working on the project for a long time. (The underpass will replace a level train crossing that currently ties up traffic. Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman says the fact an election is looming was not lost on the city. He says the city has been advocating for the project for a long time.)
