British Columbia's premier is calling for stiffer penalties for people found responsible for starting wildfires. Christy Clark is in the Kootenay region where she says a fire responsible for destroying 30 homes was likely human caused. The Rock Creek fire flared up on Thursday and has forced the evacuation of hundreds of residents. Clark says the situation is serious enough that the province needs to send a strong message. (B-C has burned through its annual firefighting budget of about 60-million dollars. To date more than 200-million dollars has been spent fighting fires since April 1st.)
