The mayor who became the public face of Lac-Megantic after the rail tragedy that killed 47 people in the town in 2013 is stepping down. Colette Roy Laroche said on the town's website that she will not seek re-election in this fall's municipal vote. She had been mayor since 2002. Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre says the Lac-Megantic mayor had to deal with a lot over the past few years, including the death of her husband in February. (Roy Laroche was nearing the end of her term in the summer of 2013 and wasn't planning to run again in the election in the fall of that year. But after the tragedy, her mandate was extended for two more years by the provincial government.)
