Stephen Harper's political opponents are calling on him to personally intervene to secure the release of jailed Canadian journalist Mohammed Fahmy. Both the Liberal and NDP Foreign Affairs critics accused Harper of failing to act decisively enough to help Fahmy, who was sentenced to three years in jail by an Egyptian judge Saturday morning. The NDP's Paul Dewar urged Harper to pause his electoral campaign to help Fahmy. (Fahmy has been sentenced to three years in jail in a verdict widely condemned by human rights experts. He has been charged with broadcasting false news, not getting security clearance for equipment and not registering with a journalism syndicate.)
