Preview Clip

The Premiers of Quebec and Ontario have criticized NDP and Conservative plans to reform the Senate. Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne told reporters in Quebec City that New Democrat Leader Thomas Mulcair's proposal to the abolish the Senate is not realistic. On Wednesday, Mulcair told the CBC that an NDP victory next month would give him a mandate to talk to the provinces about abolishing the upper chamber. But Wynne says any changes to the Senate cannot be done without the approval of the provinces. (Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard repeated abolishing the Senate would not be in Quebec's interests and repeated that it's a fundamental element of the Canadian federation that can't be changed without a constitutional discussion. The premiers made their comments during a joint cabinet meeting in Quebec City.)
