Only four of the air force's venerable Sea King helicopters are due to be written off by the end of next March, despite a splashy retirement party for the five decade-old workhorses. The Conservative government went to great lengths last spring -- before the election call -- to demonstrate the Sea Kings could begin retiring in 2015 as promised. National Defence is also spending more than 500-thousand dollars on a program to ensure the transition to the new Cyclone helicopters is not a total culture shock for pilots and aircrew. Defence Minister Jason Kenney says that's to be expected. (There are approximately 26 Sea Kings still operating -- four are being written off this year, but defence sources say two of them were already damaged.)
