The New Democrats say the Liberal government's decision to lower standards for highway maintece in 2009 resulted in dangerous driving conditions after winter storms. NDP transportation critic Wayne Gates says it makes no sense for the Ontario government to buy snow plows and other equipment for companies it hires to maintain the highways. (Carillion Canada was fined 900-thousand-dollars for not clearing the QEW after two storms last winter, but is still negotiating with the government on the exact amount in penalties it will actually pay.)
