The Liberals have swept to power in Canada and made major gains in Manitoba. The wins were most pronounced in the Winnipeg region, where the party took back some former strongholds from the Conservatives. But they failed to crack into the rural region. Paul Thomas is professor emeritus of political studies at the University of Manitoba. He says the Conservatives had a lock on the countryside. (Thomas says there are some limits to what a national movement towards a particular party can accomplish.)
