It was 20 years ago today, when Canadians collectively held their breath as votes were counted in the 1995 Quebec sovereignty referendum. Sovereigntists say a huge rally held for the "No" side in Montreal helped to defeat the plebicite. Christopher Dye, a lawyer from Montreal now living in Bermuda, attended the Unity Rally and was a volunteer for the "No" side. He says the referendum was a healthy exercise for the country. (Twenty years later, the sovereignty movement is diminished, but both sovereigntists and federalists agree it has not gone away completely, and probably never will.)
