It was 20 years ago today, when Canadians collectively held their breath as votes were counted in the 1995 Quebec sovereignty referendum. Twenty years later, the sovereignty movement is diminished, but both sovereigntists and federalists, including former Quebec premier Jean Charest, agree it has not gone away completely. (Supporters of the "No" side were celebrating in the streets in 1995 when the referendum on Quebec independence was defeated within the narrowest of margins.)
