Preview Clip

It was 20 years ago today, when Canadians collectively held their breath as votes were counted in the 1995 Quebec sovereignty referendum, with the federalist "No" side eventually winning by a narrow margin. Seven weeks before the referendum, on September 13th, 1995, then-Bloc Quebecois leader Lucien Bouchard said his side would not respect the results if the "No" side won. (Twenty years later, the sovereignty movement is diminished, but both sovereigntists and federalists say they believe the movement will never go away completely.)
