Vancouver police are refusing to say whether they're using a controversial mass-surveillance technology to spy indiscriminately on cellphone calls. The police force has rejected a freedom-of-information request asking for any documents related to a technology known as Stingray. Doug King is the lawyer who filed the request and he says accountability is needed around the invasive technology. (Stingray's parent company allegedly requires its clients to sign a non-disclosure agreement that prevents them from revealing anything about the technology or even whether they've been in talks to buy it.)
