A Manitoba backbencher is pushing for a new law to ease the battle between motorists and cyclists. Dave Gaudreau (GOH'-droh) is putting forward a private member's bill to require drivers to give cyclists a one-metre buffer zone when passing them. Gaudreau says the law would include penalties. (Most private member's bills never become law, but Gaudreau says he is optimistic and has discussed his bill with the provincial transportation department. The one-metre rule was adopted this year in Ontario. The legislation there penalizes offending drivers with 110-dollar fines and two demerit points.)
