Research based on Vancouver's safe-injection site suggests it makes economic sense for Ontario to have five similar facilities to support drug addicts. Medical researcher Doctor Ahmed Bayoumi (BAY'-ooh-mee) of Saint Michael's Hospital in Toronto says that city could have three facilities similar to the Insite clinic in Vancouver, and two such sites could open in Ottawa. Bayoumi says the study looked at whether Insite-type facilities would be a good investment, considering the increasing effectiveness of hepatitis C treatment alone. (Bayoumi says what's needed now is the political will to use the research showing good value for money spent on freestanding clinics, such as Insite.)
