A study based on Vancouver's safe-injection clinic suggests it makes financial sense to have five such sites in Ontario. Doctor Ahmed Bayoumi (BAY'-ooh-mee) of Saint Michael's Hospital in Toronto says he used Vancouver's Insite as a case study to determine that three such sites could be supported in that city, and two in Ottawa. He says the increasing effectiveness of hepatitis C treatment alone means Insite-type clinics for drug addicts would be a good investment in Ontario, but the next step involves political will. (Bayoumi says multiple facilities would be needed in the Ontario cities because unlike in Vancouver, those cities' drug-addicted populations are more spread out.)
