Members of Parliament have elected Liberal Geoff Regan as Speaker of the House of Commons. The 56-year-old who represents the riding of Halifax West was first elected in 1993, defeated in 1997 and then re-elected in 2000, and has served as MP ever since. After being elected, Regan told the Commons he is well aware of how long it has taken for the House to elect a speaker from one of the Atlantic provinces.(applause fades) (Regan defeated fellow Liberals Denis Paradis and Yasmin Ratansi and Conservative Bruce Stanton in the voting for the role.)
