Former refugees say that while thousands of displaced Syrians will soon arrive in Canada with few possessions, it won't take them long to get established. Haidah Amirzadeh was seven months pregnant and couldn't speak English when she arrived as a refugee in Saskatoon in 1989. Amirzadeh, who put herself through law school, says refugees are looking for opportunity. (Another former refugee who now works with the Regina Open Door Society says history has shown that many refugees go on to become successful and very few need social assistance.)
