Families of Syrian refugees are beginning their new lives in Canada today, after the first government planeload arrived in Toronto last night. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was on hand to greet the first couple of families from the plane and outfit them with new winter coats. Kevork Jamkossian told the prime minister through a translator that he, his wife, and their 16-month-old daughter are happy to be here. (All of the Syrians on board are sponsored by private groups, many of whom had filed the necessary paperwork months ago in order to bring in some of the estimated 4.3 million Syrians displaced by that country's civil war, now into its fifth year.)
