Mines Minister Bill Bennett says he plans to introduce legislation that cracks down on mining companies that don't meet provincial regulations. Bennett says he accepts the findings of a report into the tailings pond breach at central British Columbia's Mount Polley mine. The report concludes poor water management practises contributed to the disaster and agrees charges under the Mines Act are not warranted. (Opposition New Democrat mines' critic Norm Macdonald says the report by B-C's chief mines inspector fails to hold anybody responsible for the collapse. The disaster saw twenty-four-million cubic metres of mine waste and water spill into area lakes and waterways.)
