American scientists who spent five years collecting and analyzing fecal samples from killer whales near Seattle and Victoria found their diet consists almost solely of Chinook salmon in the summer. Seattle-based Northwest Fisheries Sciences Centre scientist Michael Ford says the study confirms through DNA analysis of killer whale poop that the diet of the endangered mammals is more than 98 per cent Chinook salmon. (Ford says scientists in the US and Canada say the study provides useful information to government officials tasked with managing whale recovery efforts and salmon stocks.)
