Postmedia announced about 90 layoffs today, merging newsrooms in four cities where it operates two papers, in an attempt to slash costs amid mounting revenue losses. Paul Morse, president of Unifor Local 87-M, which represents some of the Ottawa employees who were let go, says running two newspapers out of one newsroom will mean the publications lack editorial independence and integrity. (The company will offer buyout packages to employees in Vancouver and Ottawa in the coming days, which could add up to another 50 employees leaving Postmedia.)
