The federal government is attempting to settle a lawsuit from about 12 hundred former students of residential schools in Newfoundland and Labrador. Lawyer Steven Cooper represents many of the plaintiffs who were left out of a federal compensation package and apology in 2008. He says the tone from Ottawa has changed since the Liberals took power. (Federal lawyers previously denied Ottawa had any role in running schools that opened before the province joined Confederation in 1949.)
