A land use and forestry agreement covering a massive area of British Columbia's central coast is being hailed as an agreement for the world. Sierra Club B-C spokesman Jens Wieting (Jents VEE'-ting) says the province, First Nations, environmentalists and forest companies have reached a deal that protects the Great Bear Rainforest from logging -- but also accommodates forestry needs. (Wieting says, at 6.4-million hectares, the protected area is larger than the Netherlands, Belgium or Switzerland. He says B-C had a global responsibility to manage the environmental and economic needs of the unique, temperate coastal rainforest.)
