An internal memo from Providence Health Care in Vancouver is reminding its leadership team that physician-assisted dying violates its Catholic tenets. The memo comes as a parliamentary committee in Ottawa releases recommendations on assisted suicide, including the proposal that all publicly funded hospitals be required to offer the service. Dying With Dignity CEO Shanaaz (shah-NAHZ') Gokool says her organization is thrilled at the recommendation. (Last year the Supreme Court of Canada struck down the law banning doctor-assisted death. The federal government has until June 6th to come up with replacement legislation.)
