Former Alberta premier Don Getty died early this morning of heart failure at an Edmonton long-term care centre. He was 82. Getty led the province from 1985 to 1992, and helped steer Alberta through the economic slowdown and falling energy prices of the 1980s. Getty was a vocal opponent of official bilingualism, and in 1992 said Canadians should have the right to decide if it should be included in a new constitution.
