Kate Fraser says renting chickens is an easy way for families to find out if backyard farming is everything it's cracked up to be. The Vancouver Island woman is one of two Rent-The-Chicken operators in British Columbia, and among just eight in Canada. Fraser's chicken rentals come with coops, feed and the option of two or four egg-laying hens. (Backyard chickens are permitted in many Canadian cities, but Toronto, Calgary and Winnipeg have bylaws against chickens in yards.)
