The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took part in an emotional, historic and politically charged ceremony in Victoria last night. The event saw Prince William add a ring of silver reconciliation to a ceremonial staff used in the B-C legislature when the monarch or her provincial representative is present. Canadian Press reporter Dirk Meissner was there and says First Nations leaders spoke about the need to change how the Crown interacts with indigenous people in Canada. (A number of leaders with the Union of B-C Indian Chiefs opted not to take part in the ceremony as a protest of provincial and federal government inaction on key First Nations concerns.)
