Nova Scotia's sailing ambassador is going back to using a wooden rudder after a massive steel rudder proved too heavy. Experts have said the steel system would change the shape of The Bluenose and shorten its life. Transport Minister Geoff MacLellan says the final decision has now been made, and the cost is being worked out. (The building of the replica vessel has cost 23.8-million dollars to date, and MacLellan says the overall project will end up coming in at around 25-million dollars. The project is about 11-million dollars over its original budget and was years behind in its completion.)
