The Royal Canadian Navy's last operational support ship, HMCS Preserver, was officially retired today during a special "paying off" ceremony along the Halifax waterfront. Standing beside the ship, Rear-Admiral John Newton told the crowd Preserver and its sister ship, HMCS Protecteur, helped the navy punch above its weight. (The 46-year-old steaMP.wered ship was the last of three auxiliary oiler replenishment ships to be retired. Canada is currently leasing support ships from Spain and Chile as the navy waits for replacement vessels.)
