Statistics gathered from federal prisons and provincial facilities in four provinces show jailhouse assaults have been rising. In one recent incident captured on videotape at the Halifax Burnside facility, a inmate was allowed into a unit with a prisoner he wasn't supposed to be near after a computer glitch failed to alert guards. John Peach of the John Howard Society says the prison systems need to do a better job at reducing beatings. (Nova Scotia's director of corrections says the computer glitch that led to the beating caught on videotape is being worked on. In Nova Scotia, annual assault numbers are up by about one third compared to 2014.)
