Many drivers in B-C can expect their basic insurance rate to increase 4.9 per cent next year. The province has directed the B-C Utilities Commission to approve the rate increase for ICBC. But longer-term, Transport Minister Todd Stone says rates are becoming unaffordable for many. He says a review of the public insurer will be commissioned in the new year with the goal of finding solutions to managing rising costs while keeping rates down. (Stone says the government is not considering privatization of auto insurance, and that the review is expected to be completed in time for the next round of rate-increase requests in the summer.)
