N-B Power has decided to prolong the life of the Mactaquac hydroelectric generating station. Work will be done to keep the 670-megawatt dam on the St. John River in use until 2068. The utility had studied other options, such as replacing or decommissioning the dam by 2030. But CEO Gaetan Thomas says extending the life of the facility makes the most sense. Louise Comeau of the Conservation Council of New Brunswick says it's a responsible decision. (The project is expected to cost up to 3.6 billion dollars. Replacing or removing the dam was expected to cost close to five-billion dollars.)
