BC announced tough new auto-emission standards. The auto industry was told to meet tougher US emission standards by 1998, or face stiff fines. By 2001, vehicles sold in BC had to produce 70 per cent less smog than earlier cars. BC Environment Minister Moe Sihota said he acted because he didn't believe the industry would. (Sihota said the changes would add $158 to the price of a vehicle. But carmakers disagreed, saying it would be more like $500 and up.)
