Stockwell Day sent a cheque for $60,000 to the government of Alberta on March 5th. The money came from a mortgage the Canadian Alliance leader said he took out on his personal home. It was to pay at least part of the $800,000 dollars Alberta taxpayers had to shell out to settle Day's defamation lawsuit. Day choked back tears at an Ottawa news conference when he asked the people of Alberta to accept the money. (Day also apologized to Lorne Goddard, the Red Deer lawyer who sued over a letter Day wrote which criticized Goddard for defending a man accused of possessing child pornography.)
