A Canadian expedition climbing Mount Everest gave up its bid to reach the summit. The final obstacle was jet-stream winds and minus 40-degree temperatures. Calgary's John McIsaac said it was the thought of his wife and two daughters back in Calgary that kept him alive during terrifying moments of the descent. (Although they weren't successful in climbing Mount Everest, the 14 Canadians and one American were able to reach their primary objective -- to raise awareness of Rett Syndrome, a neurological disorder that affects infant girls.)
