On February 18th Metro Toronto Police, Niagara Regional Police and members of the Green Ribbon Task Force held a news conference. Detective Sergeant Bruce Smollett of the Metro Toronto Police Sexual Assault Squad announced that 28-year-old Paul Bernardo had been charged with dozens of offences in the so-called "Scarborough rapist" case. (Missing from the charges was any mention of the deaths of 15-year-old Krlsten French of St. Catharines and 14-year-old Leslie Mahaffy of Burlington. That didn't come until May 19, when Bernardo, who legally changed his name to Paul Teale, was formally charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of unlawful confinement, two counts of kidnapping, two counts of aggravated sexual assault and one count of performing an indignity to a human body. Teale's estranged wife Karla Homolka was charged on May 18 with two counts of manslaughter in the French-Mahaffy killings.)
