On January 20th, Prime Minister Stephen Harper arrived in Israel to kick off his inaugural visit to the Middle East, and became the first Canadian PM to address the Knesset -- Israel's parliament -- expressing unequivocal words of support for Israel and broad admonitions to other countries. His address ended with a standing ovation. (While Harper's speech drew plenty of sustained applause, at least one Arab member briefly tried to shout Harper down before angrily storming out of the chamber when the prime minister spoke of what he called "the twisted logic" of calling Israel an apartheid state.)
