Fire spread through the fifth floor of a suburban Toronto apartment building in early January, killing six people. Fire Chief Alan Speed said the blaze sent smoke wafting through the building, trapping dozens of residents inside their apartments or on their balconies. The six victims died of smoke inhalation in the stairwells.
