Toronto city councilor Jack Layton stunned New Democrats with a first-ballot victory in the race to become the new leader of the federal NDP. Layton, endorsed by former party leader Ed Broadbent, won by a remarkable margin, taking more than 53 per cent of the votes on the first ballot. Layton spoke to delegates in Toronto following his January 25th win.
