One year after Oka, the Mohawk community commemorated the beginning of the crisis with traditional song and dance. The police-escorted march, led by Manitoba's Elijah Harper, drew silent stares from the few Oka townsfolk who stopped to watch. Harper told natives attending the Kahnestake pow-wow and spiritual gathering the Oka crisis alerted the world to the plight of Canadian natives. This was sound of natives marching through the town of Oka.
