The Conservatives scored a convincing victory in the Prince Edward Island election, ending a decade of Liberal rule. Tory leader Pat Binns promised to give Islanders a greater voice in their government. During the campaign he blasted the Liberal government under Premier Keith Milligan for not standing up to the Chretien government over decisions to cut unemployment insurance. Binns served immediate notice to Ottawa. (The victory was the first Tories in Atlantic Canada had to smile about since the late 80s. They had faced a string of defeats since then.)
