Lucien Bouchard didn't get the support he wanted in a confidence vote at the Parti Quebecois convention in late November. The PQ leader received a lukewarm vote of confidence of 76.7 per cent and had to beat back hardliners who wanted to get rid of a law allowing bilingual signs. Bouchard left the convention without calling a news conference, but he told reporters he was confident he had the support of the party.
