A young soldier burst into the national assembly in Quebec City in early May. He opened fire and killed three people and injured 13 others. Quick thinking by the sergeant-at-arms, Rene Jalbert, probably prevented other deaths or injuries. Jalbert later described to reporters how talk of military life formed the basis of an almost friendly rapport with the gunman.
