Deputy Prime Minister Herb Gray said negotiations with churches that once ran Indian residential schools in Canada had not been going well. On October 29th, Gray announced it was time to get back to the priority of helping victims of abuse in the live-in schools. (Gray announced the federal government would pay 70 per cent of all out-of-court settlements of abuse cases that could be proved. Some estimates suggested it would cost at least two billion dollars to settle all of the potential cases.)
