On September 1, 1983 a South Korean jetliner carrying 259 passengers, including 10 Canadians, was shot down after it flew into Soviet airspace north of Japan. In response, Ottawa suspended Aeroflot's landing privileges at Mirabel for 60 days. Canadian Press reporter Rick Gibbons says the Soviet embassy in Ottawa was confronted by an angry protest by South Koreans.
